This is Bobby Staples, and I am in need of some people to come out to help me with my eagle project on August 7th. It will start at 9 am at Mar-Lu-Ridge Camp, just outside Jefferson, about 15 minutes from Middletown. The project is building some platforms for a campsite, so no skill beyond using a hammer or drill is required and anyone can help. If you can make it, just let me know by email at rstaples17@comcast.net by July 31st and I will give directions to the camp once you reply.
Thanks,
Bobby Staples

Just a couple of items to put on your calendar. First, in the previous news is information about Troop 964 Model Train Show on March 13th and 14th. I am a total railroading nut, in case not everyone knew, so I am taking it upon myself to coordinate our troop going to visit. Because of the first aid meet on March 13th, I am looking to go on Sunday, March 14th. Leaving the church by 10:30 AM should give us plenty of time to drive down and get lunch before the show opens. We should be back to the church by 5:30 PM.
We will not participate in the Merit Badge class, but as a railroad merit badge counselor, I will offer the merit badge to any boy that would want to pursue it, and I won’t charge $20 for the merit badge.
Second, it’s time to get ready for the Citizenship Merit Badge Day. Here is the hyperlink:

Popcorn Sales Update
As of right now we have had 50% of the Boy Scouts in the troop sell popcorn. This group of scouts have sold $2,998 dollars worth of popcorn! Why to go Troop 217.
Here is the break down:
Senior Patrol has sold $230
Delta Patrol has sold $1,328
Spartan Patrol Has sold $1,440
There are still 12 days left to sell. So far, 5 Scouts have earned Hershey Park tickets and several more are half way there. These tickets can be used any day during the 2010 season and discounted tickets will be available for family and friends to purchase in the coming months. Our Scouts have also earned 6 Nationals tickets. Three Scouts are close to earning Amazon.com gift cards for selling $250 on line. Of course we can not forget Josh won the random drawing for a $100 Walmart gift card. Six Scouts have earned Trails-end.com prizes.
We can sell/earn commission on popcorn all year long from on-line sales so....be sure to set up your on-line account. You can do this yourself, you just need an e-mail account. Think about handing out thank you cards with your scout account number and the Trails-end website information on it. Remind people they can buy additional popcorn on-line when you deliver their order. Tell them it makes great Christmas gifts and care packages. On-line orders ship right to the address they enter into the system.
All payments and final popcorn orders are due at our 11/12/2009 meeting.
Thanks for all your work,
Keyna Radtke

Earn money to help the troop and extra money to help your parents with scout dues and campouts. It is EASY, SIGN UP TODAY!
Contact Mrs. Radtke to sign up for sales time slots.
When: Between 2 PM to 9 PM on Friday, October 30, 2009
Where: Francis Scott Key Mall
Troop popcorn sales are off to a great start...Chandler is currently our top salesman, but there is time to over take him so do not give in yet. The sales that are made at the mall count toward a Scouts overall sheet totals, qualifying the Scout for additional prizes AND additional funds for their scout account.
Remember, on top of normal prizes, filling a sheet is worth two free tickets to a Nationals game next season (maybe they will be better next year) and an entry for a drawing for $100 Wal-Mart gift card, not to mention every scout who sells at least $275 worth of popcorn earns a ticket to Hershey Park.
ABOUT THE Friday night Popcorn SALEs at FSK mall:
We have a table area between the two jewelry stores, just off of center court, on the JC Penney corridor.
Our Scouts are permitted to move up to the edge of the center court to get attention.
One parent per Scout, at all times.
Scouts MUST be in Class A uniform.
No horseplay. Respectable behavior expected.
Scouts will be responsible for selling, parents will collect cash/checks.
There are two ATMs nearby.

Where: Spring Ridge Exxon
Sign up for a show and sell time by e-mailing me with the time you can come. I will e-mail you back if that time is available. I would like to have at least 2 scouts and one adult for every 2 hour slot. Sales credit will be divided among the scouts that participate I know that Shelly Gladhill and I are planning on attending. You might ask why the Spring Ridge Exxon? Shelly Gladhill knows the owner and asked if we could sell Popcorn. The owner said yes! Do you know a business that might allow us to show and sell popcorn? If so ask them if we can sell popcorn or give me the information and I will make contact.

This weekend is the Harper’s Ferry trip. I sent out the permission slips with the relevant information. I need to have these signed and turned in with the money at Thursday’s troop meeting. If something is going to prevent you from attending the meeting, please have the permission slipped signed, scanned, and emailed back to me by Thursday’s troop meeting, and then I’ll get your money Saturday. The point is that we need to know by Thursday how many are going so that we can buy food Friday.

Remember that the troop will be holding our Annual Troop Planning Meeting this coming Sunday, January 25th at Mr. Molanders starting at 2 PM. This is every scouts opportunity to make suggestions for camping and other activities for the upcoming year. So think about what you might want to do and write it down and be sure someone else in your patrol knows what you want to help plan.
The troop will be going to Camp Minsi in the Pocono Area of Pennsylvania from July 5 - July 11. Cost will be around $250 per scout. Additional information will be soon coming out. Look for a sign up sheet.
The troop also will be taking a crew to Philmont in 2010. The trek is scheduled for June 19 - July 1, 2010. Just after school is out. Scouts must be age 14 and first class to participate. The cost will be estimated to be about $1,500 per scout. Campership information will be given out at the first troop meeting in February. When the troop went in 2008 scouts received $2,400 in camperships. So even if you do not think you can afford the trek, apply anyway.
Like summer camp an interest sign up sheet will soon be available.

• Dinner
• Explore the park.
Sunday September 21, 2008
• Breakfast

• Arrive back at Holy Family Church by 2:00 pm. Please have your cell phone on or ready to answer the phone at home so leaders can advise if we will be far off of this time estimate. |

Training Plan for 2008 Philmont Expedition
ALL PARTICIPATING SCOUTS AND ADULT LEADERS
Preparation for your participation in our Philmont trek must now begin in earnest. That is, you need to start road marching with a full backpack a minimum of three days a week. It is best that you begin with shorter distances (2-3 Miles) and increase your distance to 5 miles with a two week period. Additionally, carry as much weight as possible - - start with 20 pounds (or 15 per cent of your body weight, whichever is greater) and gradually increase the weight until you are comfortable carrying between 35 and 40 pounds.
To gain the most from your preparation hikes, please ensure you hike on asphalt to assist in toughening up your feet, and try to select routes that traverse some small hills. Always wear two pair of wool boot socks and headgear. Remember, the intent is to get your feet in shape and get your body used to carrying the weight.
Collectively, we will conduct five preparation hikes, carrying 35 – 40 pounds of weight, and the dates are as follows:
16 Feb 10 miles (flat); Western MD Rail Trail
0800 – 1630
15 March 5 miles (up and down); Appalachian Trail,
0800 – 1630
19 - 20 Apr 12 miles (flat); C & O Canal (Overnight on Trail),
2 – 4 May Appalachian Trail (2 Overnights on Trail)
7 – 8 June Appalachian Trail (Overnight on Trail)
18 June Air Travel to Albuquerque, NM from Baltimore, MD
Departure for the two overnight hikes on the Appalachian Trail will be in the early evening or early morning timeframe, with the exact times and departure locations to be announced as soon as practical.

Troop 217 parents:
We are preparing for our 5th annual pool party and pot luck, which will be held on August 19th, from 5-8pm at the Marty Snook Pool in Hagerstown. I am in charge of organizing the food for this event and would like to try to get a plan made. Please consider what you would like to bring and let me know via e-mail at kmkehn@yahoo.com .
If you have a specialty dish that you are known for, we would love to try it. Please keep in mind that you will be sharing with a large number of people. I would also like to have a couple people willing to wait until the week before and bring whatever I see that we are short on. I can send e-mail reminders closer to the date.
I will also send out updates as to what we have or need, so that hopefully we can have a well rounded selection.
We need to have a head count on or before August 12th. Please e-mail me with your name and how many family members are attending. Only immediate family members please. We are asking that you contribute $3.00 per family to help lower the costs incurred by the troop.

Big Sweep Information: This year the registration form and contribution form are posted to the troop web server. However, there is no link from the web site to the form, so you will need to use this link:
http://www.troop217.org/docs/2007_Big_Sweep_Individual_Registration_Pledge_Form.pdf
Please print out and fill in the first page, which is the individual registration form, and turn it in to me. Print out the second page as many times as you need to track your Big Sweep contributions. DO NOT TURN YOUR MONEY OR REGISTRATION INTO VOLUNTEER FREDERICK. I will also have paper copies available at the Troop meetings. If you have any troubles with the online form, please send me an email describing the trouble you are having. In order that we can do this as a troop, and track our results as a troop, money and registrations need to be turned in to myself, Mrs. Pat Harris, or Mrs. Wunderlich. If we are not available, check with Mr. Wunderlich or any other Assistant Scoutmaster.
It looks like we are lined up to collect trash on Loy Wolfe Road again this year. More details for the weekend will be coming in the next several weeks, but be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21st, which is the day of the Big Sweep. Troop 217 will receive 75% of what we collect, with the other 25% going to the Volunteer Frederick organization.
This is the troops biggest fundraiser of the year, and your participation is crucial to helping Troop 217 reach our collection goal of $4,000. Last year our troop received $1,722.38, so you can see we have really pushed our goal for this year. Normally, each scout would receive 25% of what the troop receives back, based on contributions the scout raised, for his scout account. IF, though, we make our goal, that percentage will be raised to 50%! As an example, if a scout raises $200 in contributions, the troop receives $150 (200x75%). The scout would receive $37.50 ($150x25%) for his scout account. That amount would be $75 (150x50%) should we reach our troop goal of $4,000. This is an excellent way for you to raise money for summer camp, for the 2008 Philmont trek or to pay your dues.
If you have any questions, please send me an email, or catch me before a troop meeting.
Mr. Eggleston

If you are bringing something that needs to be kept warm, think crock pot.
If you are bringing something cold, put the bowl into a bigger bowl with ice in the bigger bowl.
Definitly cover it and provide a serving spoon or fork.
Meat dishes are the most desired ones, like chili, hot dogs, tuna sandwhiches, etc,…
Macaroni salads are ok, but don’t go as quickly as some other dishes.
Fruit salads are good, and desserts always go quickly.
Drinks and tables are being provided by the troop.
Bring chairs to sit on while eating, as well as swimming gear and towels.
After you decide what you are going to bring, please contact me either via e-mail or phone so I can make any necessary adjustments. My phone is (301)371-7512. My e-mail is
Thank you and hope to see you there.
Mrs. Tousignaut- Michaels mom.

REMINDER We will be meeting this Thursday night July 13th between 7 & 8 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church on Rt 17 south of Middletown. ALL scouts who are going to Goshen need to bring their gear for a full
inspection. After inspection we will load all gear in the troop trailer where it will be kept until Saturday. No packs will be loaded in the trailer unless they pass
inspection.
Your Goshen packet has a list of all items needed. If there is anything that is unclear
have you son call his patrol leader or the SPL, Alex at 301-739-7343.
The follow items are important to keep in mind:
1) All gear will be inspected no matter how many times you have been to camp.
2) If gear is missing you may be asked to run home and get it.
3) Parents and scouts must meet with Mr. Wunderlich to fill out a camp information form BEFORE any gear is inspected or loaded. Without this form you can not
leave for camp.
4) DO NOT wear or pack your uniform. You will wear full Troop 217 Class A uniform on Saturday. If you are bringing spare uniform parts (socks, etc.) these should be packed. You should also pack a clothes hanger as you will need to to hang your uniform each night after flags.
5) Please bring your money for gas and the return breakfast on Thursday in an envelope with the scouts name on it. Your Saturday lunch money should be in your pocket when you are dropped off to leave Saturday
morning.
Parents and scouts need to see Mr.
Wunderlich on Saturday before the parents leave.
6) If you are working on a merit badge that requires work to be done at home, please make sure that work is packed with your gear for inspection.
7) Please bring any old hand tools you may be willing to donate on Thursday.
Mr. Wunderlich will collect these items for the quartermaster at camp. If you have a question about a tool, call Mr. Wunderlich directly.
|
| |

If you have any extra tools that you can spare, please bring them to the pack drop off next Thursday, July 13th at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Thank you, Mrs. Pam Harris

Hershey Park Trip Cancelled
Since there was a general lack of interest in this event, we do not have enough boys to get the troop discount. Therefore, we will not be going to Hershey this week.
Since this is a holiday week, we will also not be having a meeting. I need all patrol leaders to call the SPL Alex on Monday to get the meeting information for next week. At that time we will be loading our gear, having a general gear check and have the final paperwork check for camp. All boys MUST have a parent present at this meeting to meet with the scoutmaster and go over the paperwork for summer camp.
